Starting out as a local butcher shop and meat retailer in 1909, OSI Food Solutions is now one of the largest food processing firms in the world. They supply processed food throughout both North and South America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Between 1909 and 1955 they had become a wholesaler of fresh beef. In 1955 they were chosen by Roy Kroc as his sole provider of beef in his new fast food restaurant, McDonald’s. Along with McDonald’s, they started supplying food across the state of Illinois, then across America, and eventually internationally. Today they still count McDonald’s as one of their clients along with a number of other restaurants such as Burger King, Subway, and Pizza Hut.
While for most of its history OSI Food Solutions stuck to beef processing they now offer far more. They now offer poultry, pork, bacon, hot dog, and specialty sausage processing. They also provide fried foods to their customers as well as pizza, baked snacks, sandwiches, entrées, kettle products, and sous vide processing. They can also supply produce such as lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and an assortment of fruits.
It was in Germany that OSI Food Solutions first started its European operations, in 1978. They expanded into Spain in 1980 and in 1982 they opened up shop in Brazil. They first entered Asia in 1987 when they established a joint venture in Taiwan and in 1990 the started another joint venture in the Philippines. When China opened up its markets to foreign companies they established their first joint venture there in 1992. In 1995 they started a subsidiary in India and entered the Australian market in 1996.
